My name is Jenna Maksian and I am an independent media designer from Shrewsbury, MA. I'm a senior at Saint Michael's College where I major in Media Studies, Journalism, and Digital Arts and minor in Business Administration. Welcome to my senior thesis web documentary, Press Snooze.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking to yourself, “Wow, this college student would be doing her senior thesis on sleep. That’s all they do in college.” Yes, I am a college student and I do love to sleep. As does everyone. And yes, being a busy college athlete postpones my sleep. But that’s not why I chose this topic for my senior capstone project.
During the fall 2014 semester, I studied abroad in Rome, Italy with one of my best friends from college. We landed there in August and our apartment was located in the magical neighborhood of Trastevere. Filled with homemade gelato, hundreds of restaurants, and years of history, Trastevere was the perfect place for me. Although when we first arrived in our neighborhood, we were a little confused as local stores and some restaurants appeared to be closed during peak hours of the day. All tourist sights and souvenir shops were open, but how could I get immersed into the culture if local shops were shut down?
We soon found out that some things in Italy shut down for the month of August. This is a tradition of the Italian culture and most Italians go on their summer vacation to seaside destinations like Sicily or visit family. After August was over, the local shops reopened, but then they took a pisolino (their version of a siesta) between the hours of 2pm and 4pm. And it wasn’t just Italy that took a break. I saw this trend popular in every country I visited. The entire continent of Europe seemed to take a nap during these times every day. I thought this idea of a break was quite a strange concept that us Americans have a hard time understanding.
Ever since I noticed the importance of napping during my experience abroad, the concept has never left my mind. When it came time to propose ideas on what to investigate for my senior seminar project, my goal was to think of something that was universal to everyone. I thought it would be a cool idea to produce a website all about sleep considering it’s something we all have in common and it’s something we make so secretive in society today.
Thank you for visiting my website. I hope you enjoy reading all about it as much as I loved creating it.
